Teaching philosophy

Progress matters most when learning stays enjoyable.

Students learn best when they look forward to lessons and understand how they are improving. Each lesson balances enjoyment, strong foundations and practical goals.

Rather than forcing every student through the same program, Reuben adapts repertoire, explanations and lesson pace to the individual.

  • Goals shaped around the student
  • Clear feedback and visible milestones
  • Creativity alongside reading and technique
  • Encouragement without losing direction

Frequently asked questions

Starting piano lessons

Who are lessons for?

Lessons are available from around age five through adulthood, from complete beginners to advanced players. Some four-year-olds may be accepted when a parent believes they are ready.

Can parents sit in?

Yes. Parents are always welcome to attend, and their involvement is often encouraged for younger children.

Do I need a piano at home?

Regular access to an instrument is important. A fully weighted 88-key digital piano is a practical starting point for many students, and Reuben can help you choose an appropriate instrument.

What styles can I learn?

Lessons can include classical, jazz, contemporary and pop music, alongside improvisation, music theory, reading and technique. Jazz and contemporary piano are particular strengths.

Do you prepare students for exams?

Yes. Lessons can prepare students for AMEB or ABRSM examinations, as well as auditions and performances.

How does term billing work?

Lessons are invoiced as a full school-term block after the free trial. Students beginning partway through a term pay only for the remaining scheduled lessons.

Can a lesson be rescheduled?

A lesson may be rescheduled with at least 24 hours' notice, subject to availability. Each lesson can be moved once and should normally be completed within the same term.
